This may be my last entry from my current computer — my supervisor's acquired a new laptop and has decided to pass his on to me, and mine is tripping on down to [ profile] loupdebois sometime in the near future... the "new" machine is actually the same vintage as my current one, but whereas I got the basic model, my supervisor's is the tricked-out one with a somewhat faster chip and much more space.

Went out to the country with [ profile] rottenfruit Saturday night, arrived very tired to supper with my folks, my sister and her boyfriend (who we hadn't met before). I think we both pretty much approve... almost as soon as my mom was alone with us she had a mini-debriefing session to get our opinions. It's not much of a stretch to presume that way back in March there was a similar debriefing right after Elizabeth and I were on the bus. It was a nice wander out, and a good change of pace. Lots of talking, plenty of rest, some dreamlike moments and even some required reading.

I think that cold that I've been dodging since the beginning of the semester just thwacked me. Buy your tissue futures now. This week'll be a little lighter, but still with a couple of freelance appointments -- and that's only what's arranged ahead. Still, if I'm smart I'll be careful to sleep and eat well.

Comment on this post and...
1. I'll respond with something random about you.
2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I'll pick a flavor of jello to wrestle with you in.
4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.

New to me... new enough!

1. I think you're one of the LJers I've met where the gap between LJ awareness and actual meeting has been the longest so far.
2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I think strawberry.
4. "something that only makes sense to you and me"
5. The apartment tour on movie night.

I think you missed 2 and 4 unless that was done on purpose. And a Meerkat? What's a Meerkat? Is it that creature from the Shannara books?

Oh, and i'm a life long Montrealer. :)

4 was intentional, 2... La Mala Educación, from movie night.

A meerkat's a South African social burrowing mammal, as featured in The Lion King.

1. You gave a stuffed Elder God to a toddler for Christmas one year... it was so cute!
2. OK, not a movie, but Invader Zim!
3. Licorice-flavoured jello.
4. Straps. Just straps.
5. Archery shoot-off at Tamaracouta.
6. Toft. Due to that psychic link you have.
7. I have ways of finding that stuff out :P

1. I couldn't figure out just where you lived for the longest time... you talked about a bunch of places like they were home.
2. The Hitchhiker's Guide (TV edition) seems somehow appropriate.
3. I'm thinking lychee-flavoured jello.
4. Blah blah blah... Banach spaces. No other pure math buffs around here yet.
5. Seeing a totally random friend with something about "zool" pop up on my list.
6. Not surprisingly, a stripey cat.
7. How and when did you meet Geoff? He seems to have just always been there without explanation.

Huh... well done. :) And your answers amuse me. I guess I do talk about a lot of places like they're home.

Why lychee!? Have I confessed my adoration for lychees here? I had no idea!

I met Geoff at the bookstore I worked in while in Edinburgh, and I met him just when I started working (so, end of Sept 2003). We started dating about a month later. If you're actually interesting in the whole gushy story - which, I must warn you, was written while I was still in the throes of romantic shock and awe - it's here. :)

Lychees seemed like a West-coast-ish kinda fruit, and they're almost like jello to start with, and pale yet distinctive -- seemed like a good enough fit to me.

So, I removed #8 from the list (wherein I order you to post the meme in your LJ), but I'd be curious to see the results if you opened this one up to your friends...

That's neat. Though I didn't try lychees until I went to scotland, I do see where you're coming from. :)

I kinda don't do memes on my journal. It's not a definite rule or anything, and I rarely mind reading or participating in them in other people's journals, but it just doesn't work for mine. I don't even have a coherent reason why.

1. I thought those black and red socks you were wearing last week were from the goth garage sale.
2. Two Thousand Places at Once -- just because it's an interesting song that you had acquired.
3. I think cola-flavoured jello.
4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
5. Probably you keeping me company as I puked my guts out after Relieve Me.
6. Also a meerkat. An inordinate proportion of the population reminds me of meerkats.
7. What is the main attraction for you of media junkiedom?

I'd forgotten about this: for me, the main appeal of media junkiedom is the editorial page. It's all about the ideas for me.

Same here: a little front page, and all the editorial page(s), whenever I plunk down for lunch somewhere with papers kicking around. Columnists about geeky stuff, too.

1. I have met you exactly once that I recall.
2. I'm not sure I can pull this one off yet.
3. Coffee flavoured jello.
4. I'm not sure I can pull this off, either.
5. Walking down Ste. Catherine with you and Josie.
6. Stallman's pet Gnu.
7. How are you connected to the Concoria COMS people?

Heh, I was just commenting on your entry, rather than fishing for the meme thing. I figured meeting me exactly once would make this rather difficult, but you did give me a vibe that you might be someone that I'd find interesting. A bit early to say, though. :-)

Stallman's pet gnu? LOL! Considering how annoying I find the man, that's quite hilarious! I guess I'm one of these pragmatic "open source software" people rather than an idealistic "free software" person. I think we need the latter around, as they seem to provide some beacon to look at, but using their bloody software (Debian's "it doesn't work at all, but it's free so you could fix it" being better than "it's closed, but working good and well-maintained" policy, for example) and talking to them (or any other kind of zealot-type people) generally irks me.

I didn't even know what the COMS is, I had to google it up! I'm just some guy, really. I know some number of people who go at or went at Concordia, but not particularly COMS or another program (although I used to know a few people in the IT department there, the IITS I think it's called). I never went to any university, myself.

I think having a moment to compare notes about a new person 'round the dinner table makes sense in a way... all five of us immediate family have got in the habit of that kind of "well, what just happened there?" talk (not a formal debriefing, although that's a funny image). I wonder how strange it is to other people, though.

Date: 2005-09-20 12:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Yeah, now I can sort of see how that happens, it's just the usage of "debriefing" brought back images of actual debriefings I've had in the past for work (used to work as a system analysts for the supercomputer contractor of Environment Canada), and I thought that was just weird. :-)

"No Business Like Show Business"? Really? May I ask why?
I hate that song, but I LOVE the show it's from (Annie Get Your Gun). :)

Yes, I met your sister, though breifly...she came to my husband's birthday dinner.

It's a really, really, really small world, isn't it?

1. You were born exactly 425 days after me.
2. Right now, "2000 Places at Once".
3. Orange jello, but with fruit pectin or something instead of gelatin.
4. I'll climb tall trash cans for you any day.
5. This shy, beautiful girl behind a sequined mask at MJ's birthday incident, almost a year ago.
6. I'm caught between a rat, a cat and a gazelle. Nothing really does you justice.
7. I'm not sure I have any outstanding questions... but I know where to track you down when I do!
