[#1778] add prev/next day links to /read?date=YYYY-MM-DD

This changes the existing behavior of the Reading Page View
By Date feature as follows:

- Add navigation links to Previous Day and Next Day, unless the
next day would be in the future (according to GMT), or if
there are more entries to view for the given day (normal
skip behavior constrained by date, as before).

- Don't propagate ?date page arguments in skiplinks if the user
can't use the feature (page renders normally, argument is ignored).

- Print text_noentries_day on an empty reading page if viewing
by date and no entries were found for that day (according to
server logtime, which again is in GMT). We infer whether we
are viewing by date by checking for usage of a backward skip
link on an empty reading page.

This does NOT:

- Transition automatically from normal viewing mode at the
end of the 14 day / 1000 entry limit if the user can use
the feature (that's a different bug);

- Take the user's timezone into account (that's outside of scope).

Fixes #1778.

'American Gods' in the age of Trump

Neil Gaiman discusses immigrants, road trips and the importance of empathy.
April 21, 2017

Neil Gaiman hopes that “American Gods” will make your world "weirder." A TV adaptation of his critically acclaimed book of the same title, it brings viewers face-to-face with gods of the past and gods of the present, seamlessly blending fantasy, Americana and mythology.

The central character is Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), a man recently released from prison who embarks on an out-of-this-world road trip with the eccentric, Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane).

While Gaiman is a master of fiction, it turns out many of the places in the book were inspired by real places seen on his own road trips around the United States.

“I would go on long drives across America before I was writing it and as I was writing it. And I would also go on drives to places that the book had taken me,” he reveals. “I’d say, ‘Oh, okay, well the characters in the book seem to be heading here, and I’ve never really been there.’ So then I would get in my car and go for a lovely long drive.”

back roads and ghost towns )

“When I wrote the novel, the thing that I thought was absolutely and utterly non-contentious was the idea that America is a land peopled by immigrants, colonists and people coming in from elsewhere,” Gaiman notes. “The idea that you should welcome people in — that seemed non-contentious. These things have changed and seem more important now.” He adds, “I’m proud that we’re saying it.”

While the tone of "American Gods" is dark — complete with shocking sex scenes, gloriously bloody battles and the living dead — Gaiman's wishes for what viewers take away from it are bright.

“I hope that they will give a second glance to some of the people that they meet. I hope that they will think a little bit more about the new gods that they are giving their time, attention and worship to. And I hope that they will learn a little empathy.”

“American Gods” premieres on April 30 on STARZ.

Look, I was going to do a long and pretentious post about this episode, and the deeper politics of it, and the subtleties of Pearl Mackie's performance... but like an idiot I squeed on Twitter first, and first Sarah Dollard and then Pearl Mackie replied to me, so I've been all "AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH" all evening, so I'm just going to do a spoilerific list under the cut )

Now, some idiots people have been moaning on twitter and elsewhere about how their beloved show has been taken over by SJWs, who have to bring icky lefty SJW politics into everything, and it's disgusting, and Old Doctor Who never had politics in it, and they'll never watch it again... To them I say the following:

What sodding show have YOU been watching the last 54 years????

Because, honestly, the second ever story in Doctor Who history is him trying to introduce democracy to cavemen instead of a dictatorship. The third one is him trying to encourage pacifists to rise up and overthrow their oppressors - literally asking an entire race to become warriors for social justice. In the Green Death he and Jo and a bunch of hippies save the world from an evil nasty polluting multinational corporation with Quorn. In the Horns of Nimon he and Romana overthrow a corrupt regime that practises human sacrifice. In Vengeance on Varos he gives an entire shellshocked society freedom of choice for the first time ever. In Happiness Patrol he and Ace bring down an authoritarian government. The entire sodding Cartmel Era is about the poison of racism, as is every single dalek story ever written. As my friend Keir put it he's the original social justice warrior. If it's taken you till today to get that, how stupid and/or racist must you be?

Anyway, I thought Thin Ice was bloody fabulous, I love when Doctor Who stays true to it's SJW roots, and I can't wait for next week :)

I absolutely love this perfume. My dear, dear [personal profile] executrix sent it to me, and I put off trying it because I was afraid from the way the bottle looked that it would smell like a generic old man cologne. OMG, I was so wrong. So so wrong.

Description: Top notes are mint, lavender, tarragon, bergamot and lemon; middle notes are bay leaf, patchouli, jasmine, vetiver, heliotrope, anise, cedar and geranium; base notes are leather, tonka bean, amber, benzoin, oakmoss and vanilla.

This is what Luca Turin led me to believe Hermessence Vetiver Tonka would smell like. Lies, lies. Hermessence Vetiver Tonka was such a disappointment for me. Relax is a beautiful, powerful vetiver that's nicely rounded out by the tonka which gives it a creamy, vanilla underpinning (with none of the candy, sugar, dessert bullshit in Hermessence Vetiver Tonka).

I don't get any of the other notes outside of vetiver, patchouli, and tonka (and the patchouli is very minimal). It reminds me a bit of my beloved Chanel Sycomore, but it's more masculine than Sycomore IMHO. I've worn this constantly since testing it and am so happy that [personal profile] executrix sent me a partial big bottle! Whoooo!

1. Because sanguinity and I watched Yuri on Ice a couple of weeks ago,

anime Yuri ice-skating, subtitle "I'm a pork cutlet bowl fatale that enthralls men."

yesterday we met after work for a pork cutlet bowl. I got tonkatsu and she got spicy pork bowl, both tasty but neither quite like the show’s:

anime pork cutlet bowl as served on Yuri on Ice

I may or may not feel compelled to keep trying.

2. I went to my first Zumba class, at the community center this morning! My plan to hide in the back didn’t work out, as there were only two students including me. But my 1980s high-school aerobics chops got me through.

3. Two audiobooks on my phone and neither one really doing it for me. So I’m downloading I Woke Up Dead at the Mall.

It’s set at the Mall of America. For those keeping track, I was not a finalist in their Writer in Residence contest. Well, onward and upward.

Oh man, I had Pokemon Go running while I was down in Indiana, and I scored an Up-Grade from one of the two pokestops between the train station and the Dunes. Apparently the only thing the Up-Grade works on is a Porygon, but I only have one Porygon and I don’t know if I want to evolve it…

DECISIONS. Spark guide my hand.

Write Every Day 2017 - April Day 29

Today's writing:

I noodled around a bit with a dozen different WIPs, adding a sentence here and a sentence there, not getting anywhere. And then I started on the pastiche idea I mentioned the other day. I'm not seriously working on this right now - it needs a lot of research before I can do that - but I decided to just start writing because I could at least get down the very rough version of events that existed in my head. I'm not sure much - or anything - of this will make it into a final version, but at least I won't now forget what I was thinking. *g*

And it came to 2,100 words - the first decent writing day I've had all month. \o/

It was good to find out I was still capable of producing words! So of course I decided to test that on another story. (One of the many Sherlock WIPs - not a short one, but one of the easier ones.) And I got another 800 words. So it appears I can still write properly after all! Now I just need to apply that to something I can actually finish some time soon ... *g*
