Thoughts on the healthcare "debate" in the US

Barney Frank paraphrases Godwin's Law with panache.

Barney Frank is my new favourite American politician; I checked his Wikipedia page to make sure he wasn't having an isolated moment of clarity, and I'd be happy to have him as my MP: he seems like a socially progressive civil-liberties hard-liner who has come up with more good one-liners than his most recent one, and who seems able to work with Republicans (when they're not completely insane) on projects that line up with his values. His voice and attitude remind me a little of Jean Chrétien.

"In a free society a large degree of human activity is none of the government's business. We should make criminal what's going to hurt other people and other than that we should leave it to people to make their own choices."

And the Republicans/right wing try to convince us that they are the only ones in favour of less government.

He's not popular in the queer community right now for deep-sixing trans-inclusive ENDA the other year, but I think he's come on side since then.

I've always liked Frank. Just after I came out as a teenager - back when I knew no other gay people and American magazines were my only link to the community -- I read a lot of his speeches on LGBT rights. I found them inspirational.

O-T
