I can think of worse things than being likened to a tree... sounds like your friend was a wonderfully kind and compassionate person who will be greatly missed.
On missing people (in general): yes, all the familiar & comforting rituals are muted and mutated during a pandemic. It's not forever, though no doubt it feels that way, especially for the very young.
This year holiday plans will certainly be modified but celebrations will occur in some form.
