Here's the semi-standardized questionnaire applied to 2012 — it was a pretty intense year in some ways.

What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
Filed a police report, juggled two kids out solo.

Did you keep your New Year's Resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I didn't get around to making any, but I made a few around my birthday. Making them off-season seemed like a good thing to me.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Elizabeth — I cut the cord again — and my university colleague Seema. Next year is likely to be a bumper crop for other families!

Did anyone close to you die?
Nope.

What countries did you visit?
I stayed domestic again — not a streak, and maybe in the next couple of years I'll manage to go on an international conference trip again, or if all the stars align, a family vacation in the States somewhere.

What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
Mortgage freedom, a family doctor, closure in some areas, a selection process in which I might get promoted.

What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
August 2, when Vivien arrived in rather unexpected circumstances.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Two-kid excursions, securing a new post for when I return to work.

What was your biggest failure?
I'm not sure yet. I don't even have 2011's answer sorted out yet.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
I had the same old shoulder issues, and a couple of sorts of creaky back and legs, but I've been mostly healthy. [personal profile] commodorified's posture advice for the back/legs thing has been very helpful.

What was the best thing someone bought you?
Nothing bought directly for me really jumps out at me. The Sesame Street DVDs weren't exactly for me, but they did help a bouncy ball of toddler stay put on the potty while getting the hang of it, so they may have been the best thing bought for someone in terms of impact on my sanity.

Whose behaviour merited celebration?
[personal profile] commodorified for her short-notice extended Oscar care and adventures, and our midwives.

Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
I don't feel like I can finger anyone outside the news for this.

Where did most of your money go?
Still the house, this year for electrical/bathroom upgrades, fence and mortgage. All were definitely worth it!

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Vivien, stewarding (not always in a good way), dates!

What song will always remind you of 2012?
It might be Mother Mother's “Let's Fall In Love”, mostly due to insane earworm properties. Also, “Hurricane Drunk,” by Florence + The Machine.

Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? About the same — more tired but more acclimated to tired.
b) thinner or fatter? Marginally thinner — parenting makes it harder to eat or sit still, I think.
c) richer or poorer? Richer and on a good track for the future as far as I can tell.

What do you wish you'd done more of?
Peer-support sort of things, date nights, baking, yoga, gardening, reaching out, beer reviews.

What do you wish you'd done less of?
Waiting, arguing, stewing, leaving the room out of frustration (although that's often better than the alternatives).

How did you spend Christmas?
Eve in Nepean and Day in Ormstown, both with family and lots of food. It felt a little less hectic than last year, but due to everyone having more complicated lives, the Ormstown festivities felt shorter than usual.

Did you fall in love in 2012?
Stayed in love!

How many one night stands?
No one-night stands for me.

What was your favourite TV program?
Vintage Sesame Street. It's almost all that's on around here.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nope. Unless you count Humbert Humbert.

What was the best book you read?
Lolita was very well-crafted, and Humbert Humbert is approximately 2.5 Lannisters worth of evil, in a worth-reading sort of way.

What was your greatest musical discovery?
Elizabeth Mitchell is pretty awesome, especially for someone marketed as kid-friendly.

What did you want and get?
A work description for next year, a fence, a daughter in good shape and sprung from the hospital fairly quickly.

What did you want and not get?
That home-born baby we were hoping for, an awesome collective agreement, kitchen renovations.

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I stayed home (it was a week after Vivien was born and a few days after we got her out of the hospital) but was surprised by visitors with cake and presents.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Immeasurably? I still don't do immeasurable :)

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Still somewhat flamboyant with a bent toward low-maintenance. Scarves and sweaters are in, as are stripes. And bow ties on Tuesdays at the office.

What kept you sane?
Inasmuch as I did stay sane: love, travel time, walks, date nights, chores, confidants, beer and coffee.

What political issue stirred you the most?
Omnibus budget bills and the messes contained therein.

Who and what do you miss?
I miss some of my work buddies who went on to other things — it felt like My People had a higher attrition rate than the workforce in general.

I sort of miss simpler times, and work a little, and having our bed to ourselves.

Who was the best new person you met?
There haven't been a whole lot of new people, but Lisa has been a great help at work, and Steve seems worthy of my sister!

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012?
Most of what kids do makes sense. Sometimes a weird sort of sense, though.

Did I miss any useful questions? I dropped a couple of irrelevant ones, and will be watching the memesphere for stuff to add.

That would be kind of awesome in and of itself. We briefly had Fancy Fridays (as opposed to Casual Fridays) here at our office, but then we lost our snappiest dresser, and the rest of us are like "well, I'm not wearing jeans... that's fancy, right?"
