Going back to "niephling", it got me wondering about the reverse. What term could be used to denote one's parental siblings, or other significant adults in a child's life, regardless of gender? I came up with "auncle" or "auntcle", both of which are listed in the Urban Dictionary, along with "auntle" (which seems to roll off the tongue better than the first two). Not sure what we'd use in French: maybe "tancle" or "onclesse"? "Ma toncle" or "Mon tante"?
